These are welting awls designed for hand welting in shoemaking. They are used for attaching the welt to the insole and the shoe upper. The awls are made from German tool steel and carefully shaped for clean, controlled piercing.
The awls are available in lengths from 60 to 90 mm. Curved versions are available with an approximate bend diameter of 40 mm or 50 mm. Straight awls without a curve are also available.
An important feature of Starko awls is the standardized 3.5 mm shank. The shank diameter is the same for all Starko awl blades, regardless of the blade size. This allows the awl blade to be held in a suitable 3.5 mm collet holder or secured with a screw clamp.
The shank has a milled flat for secure locking with a screw. This prevents the awl blade from rotating in the handle during use.
The awls are hardened and hand-sharpened to a proper working edge. Please note that the edge should be refreshed from time to time by the user, just as you would maintain the sharpness of a knife.
Starko AW-E, AW-L, AW-R handles are compatible with these awls.
Detailed awl dimensions are shown in the product photos.
